    What's in a name?.....II

I was reading an article in the editorial of "The Times of India'.......it was titled    i_me@myself .com

We talk of identity crisis  in various situations  like living in an alien country and losing identity, changing name or identity for hiding from police......(the 'bhai" ishtyle).

Many a time this kind of loss of identity has frustrated individuals ,but have nevertheless been accepted with a feeling of helplessness.

The loss of identity the article in Times.... was talking about is the one in the virtual space.

Our name might mean something special to our parents, or in our language or religion but in the virtual land...we are always given wierd options to choose from

for example it would say...'try vasuda 2365'   because that is available.
My sons have interesting ids too. The elder one has qwerty as the 2 nd pard of his id.If you do have to adopt some strange 'string of variables' why not make it easy for everyone by just keying in the first 5 letters of the keyboard?

The younger son's id has sehwag and multan in it.......Guessed it...a cricket fan who wants a little part of that glorious match with him forever..( remember the 3 centuries sehwag took in Multan, Pakisthan.)
The funny part is if Sehwag himself wanted to get an id with Multhan added to his first name the computer will ask him to choose something  different.Sorry about that sport.
Your identity is now my son's.

Lucky are those who had names that were unigue or teased at in schools......They may be allowed unchanged.

Are we o.k with this mauling of our id's ?

I suppose so.....................Do we have a choice ?...............Can we fight with  the machine now to save our identity?

    I don't think so.
May be that's the reason we make it a point to say our id and invariably follow it up with the words, "all are in smaller cases,", not wanting to shout out from roof tops the completely 'not you' sounding ids.

    Hey Vasu
How have you been...Was away on a break and have just returned...So I am catching up...with the Bloggers World..
Looks like you been busy yourself...
Well..reference to your last post...Aamir is a very exceptional person..he believes in what is JUST...I and sure stands by it...I wish we indeed had more people like him..in this industry..It would be a nice place...to sum it up...He Ain't FAKE...with him you get what he truly is...(and trust me on this one...Know someone who has know him)
With reference to your latest post..."Whats in a Name"....tell me about it...I had to abandon about a dozen of my first choice ones...before settling for the ones i have..on my gmail..hotmail..etc...Hmm I guess with the evolution of virtual  world someday we too shall become just a number(isn't computer all about binnary system..11100011)..

With reference to your comment on my last post..Yes I was indirectly saying that...some friends who turn their back on you when you have always been there for them...Sort of matlabi....But Please let me Clarify...it has got nothing to do with being  Delhites or Bombaiyas...I guess its in ones nature to be like that...
To be honest I love Delhi and some of the Delhiwalas who have been with me through thick and thin...and without them I would be lost in Delhi...and Ironically the person in reference in my entry here...is from BOMBAY...who is now residing in Delhi...So you see Matlabi people are everywhere..
I would agree that some people are superficial..and some down to earth...Bindas...well I think they are scartered everywhere equally..the ratio would be more in Bombay...
SO i think each City has its own plus and minus...just depends who meet and how you see at them..
And hey....Thanks for being humble to have appreciated my work...I guess its just more motivating when you hear appreciations....Drop by infuture you will see more of my work..

Bye for now..on my desk..need to catch up with some work...

Isaac Asimov thought of this long time ago.

It might just be that with 100% online humanity the name at birth might automatically be suffixed with a unique number thereby taking care of everything (social security, taxes, insurance, blah blah).

It's quite logical and I for one don't really find it bothersome.

Our identity online or offline can only be something that is unique to us. Maybe someday in the future our dna/iris/fingerprint can become our id. And whatever our id is gonna be...the other person is gonna give u a nick name so they know who it is. With ur sons...whether ur id is vasuda or tryvasuda2365 they are just gonna call it mom or mother or amma or whatever they fancy.

So it is not we who define our identity...it is the other person who wants to share a relationship with us :)

Hi Vasuda! Sorry for the delay in replying to your last message. I'm a bit caught up with health issues right now; am visiting hospitals every other day with my f-i-l, going through consultations and tests. Hope all this ends soon...it's nerve wracking and tiring, but has to be done.
Glad to hear your house is almost done. It will be well worth all the effort you and your hubby have put through.
Take care of yourself in the heat, and chill with all those wonderful drink recipes you have in store!

dear vasuda, it’s true i feel lucky when (mostly) i get my desired id. may be, i may have a unique name. but i can’t say the same for my son, his name ‘saad’ is booked in almost all the forms of the word.

thanks for visiting our page and appreciating the story. i write for my son. and he likes all my stories whether he gets a word of it or not.

finally, bombay’s fine. but don’t dislike mumbai. the name is derived from a goddess’ name – goddess mumba bai (mumba=maha+amba & bai=devi), the goddess of that land. mumbabai – mumbai – bombahia (mum=bom, as portuguese pronounced it & bahia=bay, a sea shore in portuguese) – bombay (bay=bahia in english, portuguese presented bombahia to english as dowry of catherine de braganza)

yr page is very interesting. i’ll keep on visiting it.

    bye,

    noor farooqi

Hi! I sympathise with you wholly for doing the supervision work in this heat. It must be a terrible strain, but there is no option for you.
My life for the past several mnths were dramatic,is continuing to be so...maybe I have a "dosha" in my nakshatra!
My 79 yr old father in law fell v.sick on a visit to his native place, and had to be rescued on an emergency basis. We were terribly anxious, hubby had rushed down to fetch his ailing father. They returned only yesterday, and I am trying my best to don the role of Florence Nightingale (as usual!). So far, so good, let's see if any favourable period is in the offing for me. I badly need a break!!
My plans of meeting you is still on...maybe that too will coincide with my astrologically favourable period!!
Have fun, and Happy House Building!!

Hi Vasuda! Good to hear from you. How are you faring in the summer heat that has gripped B'lore?
Your advice to the elder Mahajan sibling came a little too late, but it was sound advice: he should have been given some sort of counselling long time ago. However, some family members have to give up when one of their own gets too "ziddi".

ID's are getting weirder by the minute. Nowadays people change their real names to stuff like: weirdo_whacko@something.com, madmomma@hotmail.com, naughtynutcase@hotmail.com, moron_of_the_century@trytoshutmeupifyoucan.com....
The list is endless, and I really wonder if these gen X kinds ENJOY hiding their real selves or is it just an expression of freedom? Perhaps we'll go crazycrazycrazier.com if we try to figure it out!!
